Burglary... It won't happen to us.

Apr 05, 2017

Did you know that according to Crimestoppers, a burglary happens every 40 seconds in the UK?

In fact, according to Confused.com"A quarter (26%) of Brits have been burgled, with more than one in six (15%) falling victim three times or more."

That's a huge number of break-ins each year - and many homes, businesses, and families negatively impacted as a result.

When you consider this hard-hitting statistic, it's clear that your home could be at risk.

Which means the key questions is are you doing enough to safeguard your home?

You simply don't know

Unfortunately, one of the problems with burglary is it's indiscriminate. Most break-ins are opportunistic - not pre-planned.

As a result, it's almost impossible to pinpoint who will be hit next.

Sure, you can assess risk (by looking at your property through the eyes of a criminal to try and see what they see), but you just don't know when a burglar will pass by your house.

Maybe never.

Maybe tomorrow.

Which means you can't be complacent...

It's not uncommon for homeowners to play down the risk.

After all, you're busy. You've got so much else on your plate so you don't have time to think about the worst!

But as a result, it's not unusual for people to lull themselves into a false sense of security. They convince themselves it's a crime that won't happen to them because they've got a dog, or they live in a certain place, or they haven't got anything worth stealing!

I don't blame them for thinking like this.

The consequences of burglary can be devastating and far-reaching. It's not just the loss of property (some of which will be irreplaceable) that plays on the mind, but the knowing that your home has been violated.

Suddenly your home doesn't feel as safe and secure. It can become harder to sleep at night. You can lie awake worrying about every sound that you hear - wondering if the crime is happening again.

And that's the really scary thing. Just because you've been broken into once, studies prove that might not be the end of it.

In fact, Confused.com also found that "Nearly two thirds (65%) of those that have been burgled were burgled in the same property." This seems to support the phenomena that we call the Factor of Three

Where does this leave you?

You're right.... you shouldn't have to invest time and money keeping criminals out of your home. It's common sense and good manners; you don't take something that isn't yours, right?
